The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, usually known as ACCA, is a professional body based in London, UK.
The organization offers a qualification in accounting that is recognized as the industry standard in some European contries such as UK, Ireland and Malta. In these countries, companies almost always require this qualification for roles in Controllership, General Accounting and often Revenue.
ACCA qualified accountants can also have salaries significantly higher than non qualified accountants. The ACCA qualification is basically considered more important than a university degree and some qualified accountants would have no degree at all, or a degree in a different subject.
Outside English-speaking European countries the situation is completely different. The ACCA qualification is not considered so important and most accountants have a university degree.
More in particular in Central-Eastern Europe a small minority of accountants are ACCA qualified, while in Southern-Europe the ACCA qualification is virtually unknown and a university degree is usually required.
Do we suggest to pursue an ACCA qualification?
- If your goal is to work as a Controller or Accountant in the UK, Ireland or Malta, our answer is definitely yes!
- If, on the other hand, you are interested in different opportunities and/or locations, you are probably better off getting a university degree.
